Getting Started with the Easy Wonton Soup

For those who have tried making the homemade soup, you can agree that the most difficult part is making the wontons. However, you must have realized that once you do it once or twice, it becomes relatively easy. Repetition is the key to succeed in terms of efficiency of preparation and quality of wontons.

Basically, there are two main ways of folding the wontons. You can go with the triangular form or the circular one. There is no much difference between the two since in the end, they tend to become wrinkly with flappy sides irrespective of the technique. However, given a choice, going with the triangular folds would be a wise move, but then again, it depends with your skill level and preference.

For a 6 serving wonton soup, you can use the following easy wonton soup recipe ingredient list as a guide. Worth noting is the fact that you can modify the proportion of ingredients or toy around with any other ingredient till you find the one that tickles your fancy.

Ingredients

For Wonton

  • 170 grams prawns, peeled. Can either be raw or cooked
  • 170 grams minced pork
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce, low sodium
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons rice wine, or Shaoxing wine
  • ½ tablespoon ginger, fresh and finely ground
  • 1 packet, wonton wrappers

Broth

  • 6 cups (1.4 liters chicken stock)
  • Pinch of salt and pepper
  • 1 large garlic clove
  • 4 slices of fresh ginger,
  • 1 scallion

Instructions

  1. Chop the shrimp to bite sized pieces and put them to a food processor alongside scallions, sesame oil, rice wine, ginger, pork and any other ingredients. Mix them until they combine properly.
  2. Lay some wonton covers on an even surface, and some water on a dish. To the covers, add a teaspoonful of mixture, and place on one of the edges for easy folding. Fold over the other side and press together to seal the filling. Remember to press out any air while you are sealing. Use a little water to join the filling covers. Repeat the process until all the wonton fillings are used up.
  3. Season the stock. That is done by adding a little salt to taste together with the ginger slices and garlic, scallions and white pepper. Top it off with sesame oil.
  4. Place the stock mixture on the wok and on a cooking stove set to medium heat settings. Heat it until it begins simmering. Set it aside.
  5. To another deeper wok, add some water and place it on a cooking stove, and bring the water to boil. Adjust the heat settings to medium, and dip a few wontons and let them cook for a few minutes. You will know that they are ready when they begin rising to the top, at which you remove from the boiling water with a slotted spoon. Repeat the process until all the wontons are ready.
  6. Strain the stock to remove the solid ingredients. Add this stock to the wontons in a bowl, and top it off with the scallions.
  7. Enjoy!

Cook Expert’s Notes

You can choose to preserve the wontons. However, you have to do this before they are cooked. If that is what you want to do, lay them on a baking sheet and refrigerate till they are frozen, after which you can transfer them to a freezer bag. Similarly, you can freeze a sealed container.

If you are just starting out, you can prepare the wontons in advance, of if you are preparing for a batch, you can make excess and can refrigerate the rest for the next time you are interested in making the soup. Apart from that, the made stock can also be frozen for future use.

Nonetheless, you may realize that going through the freezing and thawing process may slightly alter the taste of the soup. As a general rule for easy wonton soup recipe and most of the recipes, you are not entirely restricted to the ingredients, and there is no one size fits all when it comes to proportions to use in preparation of the soup. For instance, the addition of salt and chilis to the food. You must have noticed that in the recipe, there are no fixed proportions given for these two ingredients. That is because the appropriate amount to be added is entirely dependent on a person’s tastes which many not be necessarily the same for others.
