Everyone loves Chinese food, and it is for a good reason; the exquisite Chinese sauce that comes with it. A classic example is the Chinese spicy garlic sauce. Unlike most of the sauces served in most countries, those prepared with Asians are not overly sweet. That is not to discredit the sauces used as accompaniment by other cuisines, but honestly, tasting some sauces will make you have a love-hate relationship with some of the dishes. However, a well-prepared Chinese garlic sauce introduces you to an entirely new world of contentment. The savory balance of flavors is remarkable, and it simply sweeps you off your feet.
Chinese spicy garlic sauce is one of the healthiest sauces there is. Combine that that with the tantalizing flavor it has, it perfectly fits the phrase, “Save your health, enjoy the taste.” Garlic, the main ingredient, has numerous health benefits since it is rich in vitamins, minerals, and fibers. Most dietitians approve its use as an ingredient since it is known to lower blood pressure and balance cholesterol levels. For this reason, it is perfect for the heart, just as it is for the mouth.
Did you know that garlic was used in making herbal medicine in China and Egypt as early as 2000BC? Well, I thought you should know before we move on to the main deal, the Chinese garlic sauce. There are different ways of preparing your sauce, depending on whether you want it spicy or not. But first, I am going to give you a cheat trick on how you can make a Chinese garlic sauce in the shortest time possible
Chinese Garlic Sauce in 3 Minutes
Begin by preparing roux- that is, white sauce/paste made by melting butter in a pan, at medium heat, and adding crushed garlic. Stir the garlic until it turns brown and follow it with sieved wheat floor. Turn the mix until it turns brown, with an even consistency. Top the content with chicken stock, and your preferred Asiatic sauce with with ground chili and add let it simmer. Ladies and gentlemen, that is how you can make a Chinese garlic sauce in under five minutes. However, if you have sufficient time, you can also try the other alternative.
Ingredients for Chinese Spicy Garlic Sauce
- Vegetable cooking oil
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Green chilis
- Soy sauce
- Chicken broth
- Vinegar
- Brown sugar
- Sesame oil
- Crushed red pepper flakes
- Cornstarch slurry
- Salt
Preparation
Cut the garlic and ginger into very fine sizes and crush it using mortar and pestle. The finer these two ingredients are, the better the flavoring you will get in your sauce. Similarly, the green chili should be chopped finely. That will enable it to be properly infused in the soup. The last thing you want is to end with huge chili pieces in your soup.
The chicken broth should also be heated using low heat till it is slightly below heating temperature. However, if the soup is being prepared specially for vegans, the chicken broth should be substituted with any vegetable broth of your liking.
To another bowl, add measured amounts of rice vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, sherry or rice wine, chili sauce, and sesame oil. It is important to note that it is not a must to include all these ingredients. You can tweak different proportions depending on your favorite flavors. That means if you like the tinge of sour taste in your food, you can add more wine and rice vinegar. Similarly, if you prefer sweet tasting foods, you can increase the proportion of sugar.
If you don’t know your preferred taste, go for a higher quantity of soy sauce. Most people argue that perceiving its taste is relatively tricky. That is because it offers a mix of bitterness, sweetness, slight umami and saltiness. Therefore, it makes the best Chinese garlic sauce. Stir the contents in the bowl until it achieves a uniform paste. You can top it off with Asiatic flavors of your choice.
Making Chinese Spicy Garlic Sauce
Place the cooking pot on the heat source heater and adjust the flame setting to medium heat. Add olive oil (or any other cooking you use) to the cooking pot, and follow it with a finely ground mixture of garlic and ginger. Stir the content in the wok to prevent it from sticking at the bottom of the pan. Continue until it begins to produce fragrance.
Add the paste, the one you made during the preparations, to the cooking pot and continue stirring. Once you achieve a uniform consistency, cover the cooking pot, and allow it to simmer.
Depending on your preferred consistency, you can choose to add the cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce. You should be careful not to put it in excess. That is because it continues to thicken with an increase in temperatures.
However, in the unlikely event that you don’t have cornstarch syrup, you can modify. To a clean pan, melt two tablespoons of butter, and add a sieved wheat floor. Set the heater to low heat and stir continuously until it turns brown.
While still hot, transfer your new thickener to the pot of Chinese garlic sauce, and increase its temperature to boil.
Serve while hot.
Modifications to the Chinese Garlic Sauce
With the essential ingredients listed above, you can have limitless combinations to come up with new flavors. For those who are particularly garlic enthusiasts, you can add two tablespoons of powdered garlic to the paste.
Apart from that, if you want to make the sauce extra hot. You can add one or two more chilies.
Other ideas can include adding different ready-made sauces to make the flavor more intense. If this is what you want, Sriracha sauce will do the trick.
Finishing
Serve the Chinese garlic sauce with broccoli and fried rice.I’ve also seen people who use the sauce for dipping fried dumplings.
Final Thought
Several people get carried away while cooking the meal. As a result they end up with excess garlic sauce. The big question now becomes, how can we store the Chinese garlic sauce without fear of it losing its intoxicating flavors?
For proper preservation, you should allow it to cool and pack it in a container with a lid. Store in a refrigerator. Remember, should you store it poorly, be prepared to deal with all sorts of wired tastes the next time you open the lid.
